A Peek At What We are Doing in Fifth Grade

It’s hard to believe the year is ending so soon! Your child brought home their Friday folder on Friday. There is no need to return it to school. The students don’t need to bring the accordion on Tuesday either. They’ll just need a bag to bring everything home in and their yearbook.

Here is what we’ll be doing the last 2 ½ days of school:
Tuesday, May 28th - Graduation Practice & Clean the Room

Our schedule for the day includes: Practice graduation in the morning then cleaning the room. All classroom supplies will come home this day so please send your child to school with either an empty backpack or an extra bag. After lunch we’ll meet as a whole fifth grade for yearbook signing. We’ll also be sending report cards home this day.

Wednesday, May 19th – (Graduation & Field Days)
9:00- 9:45- Graduation practice
10:00 - Gym open for parents
Graduation: 10:30 – approx. 11:30 (Please help to put away chairs after the ceremony).
(Graduation Dress: *** In years past we have told the kids to dress nicely, yet comfortably for graduation. It is not necessarily a formal event unless you, and they, want to really dress up.)

Picnic and cake with family: 11:45(ish) – 12:30(ish)
After graduation, fifth graders and their families enjoy a picnic lunch and cake. Please bring a picnic lunch. Whether you are able to stay or not, students need a lunch to eat outside with the other 5th graders.

Field day: 1:15 – end of day! (If you plan to stay for the afternoon, please sign in at the office).
** CHANGE CLOTHES*** Students should bring a change of clothes for field days.

Thursday, May 30th – Goodbyes. Dismissal at 12:08. No Lunch

Thank you for a GREAT year! 5th Grade Team

A Peek At What We are Doing in Fifth Grade

If this is your first fifth grader at Zach, let me explain how graduation works. On Wednesday, May 29th at 10:30, we have a graduation ceremony in the gym. The doors open for seating at 10:00. The gym is usually quite full so I recommend you get here by 10:00 to get a seat. Although it is a special occasion, we don’t require students to dress up, just dress nice. After graduation, we all come out to the modulars for a picnic lunch. We’ll provide cake and lemonade, you just need to provide the picnic lunch. After the picnic, the kids go inside and change into shorts, t-shirts, and tennis shoes for Field Day which starts at 1:15.

The 17th Annual Zach Elementary Field Day will be on Wednesday, May 29th from 1:15-3:15 pm for kids in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade. Parents are welcome to come and watch, but Mr. U is looking for some volunteers. Volunteering would include helping set up, take down, and running an event. Set up will begin at 12:30pm for both days. If you are interested in helping out, please contact Mr. U at brentu@psdschools.org. The more volunteers we get, the more smoothly field day will run.

We finished our 6-word memoirs this week. You may see a video of our memoirs on our classroom blog.

A Peek At What We are Doing in Fifth Grade

We have finished testing! Yea! The students did an amazing job. They took their time and did their best. I’ll send home a copy of your child’s Maps results with their report card at the end of the year.

We’ll be visiting the middle schools on Friday, May 10th from about 9:00 to 12:00. Permission forms came home today. I would greatly appreciate it if you complete it and return it to school on Monday. If the weather is nice, the students going to Kinard will walk. Since Preston is a little further, those students will be taking a bus.

With the permission form, you’ll also find information about Human Growth and Development. Please read the note and then sign indicating whether your student will or will not be participating.

I will not be at school next Thursday and Friday for my daughter Mallory’s graduation from CU.

A Peek At What We are Doing in Fifth Grade

We are almost done with CMAS.  Yea! We are going to make up the test we missed on Wednesday on Tuesday,  April 23rd.  That day we’ll test in the morning from 10:10 to 12:40 then have homeroom in the afternoon.

Today, we were visited by arborists from the city of Fort Collins in honor of Arbor Day.  We learned why trees are so important and how the city cares for the trees in Fort Collins.  Each student brought home a tree as well.  I have attached, to this email, directions for planting the tree.  We usually a few extras if you'd like a second tree.

The students have completed their first round of testing and did an amazing job. They each took their time and put in their very best effort. They will be starting Science next week then Math the following week.

On Wednesday, April 10th, we’ll be taking class pictures. Along with a homeroom picture and individual pictures, the fifth graders take a whole fifth-grade picture.

I know it seems a long way away, but your child has started working on his or her slide for graduation. Your student needs two (2) pictures. - a little kid picture and a current picture of him or her doing something you enjoy!! Bring pictures in to be scanned or on a flash drive or email them to Mrs. Roberson anytime - rroberso@psdschools.org (no “N” in her address).  These need to be in by April 15th.

Friday, April 12th is set aside for parent/teacher conferences. Please know that if I had any concerns about your child’s progress, I would have already contacted you about having a meeting. If you would like to take this opportunity to conference with me, please send me an email with a date and time that work for you. A calendar of our testing schedule along with the theme for each day is in your child’s planner. You can help ensure that your child’s testing experience is a positive one by making sure your child gets plenty of rest and a good breakfast each morning. I’ve told the students that they can bring a small baggie with hard candy and/or gum along with a snack for testing.

A Peek At What We are Doing in Fifth Grade

How was your Spring Break? I hope everyone enjoyed time relaxing with family.

It’s not too late to purchase an Elementary Yearbook, but it soon will be. The ONLINE price is $20.00. To order please go to:

• Commpe.pictavo.com and enter the school code 79287 and click “Shop My School”.

There will not be any yearbooks available for purchase in the Zach office at the end of the year.

After Spring Break, we will begin CMAS testing. Students in fifth grade take ELA (Reading and Writing), Science, and Math. Students will be taking ...

the ELA test - Tues., April 2nd - Thurs., April 4th,

the Science test - Tues., April 9th & Wed., April 10th, and

the Math test - Tues., April 16th - Thurs., April 17th.

We test in the mornings from 10:15 to 12:40. If at all possible, please avoid appoints on these days which might require your child to be absent. It is also important that students not leave during the test, as students must finish the test the day they start. Unfortunately, this is a lot of testing that we as teachers are required to administer. As a team, we do our best to keep as much instruction time intact without overwhelming the students.

Animal Interviews

As part of our Animal Life Cycles and Reproduction unit in Science, we also picked an animal from one of the five kingdoms to research for Writing.  After researching different aspects of our animal we wrote interviews and created sock puppets to help us in our presentations.

Here are a few pictures of us with our puppets.
