A Peek At What We are Doing in Fifth Grade

I love the Wax Museum project. The students always work so hard and seem to really enjoy learning about someone new. Most of the class finished their flash drafts on Thursday. I’ve asked anyone who didn’t finish to finish their draft this weekend to turn in on Monday. Next week we will revise our writing while working on skills to become better writers. Today, we talked a little bit about the costume. Your child will need his or her costume for the dress rehearsal at school that day as well as that evening.

Your child brought home some information regarding Jump Rope for Heart and Schools on the Move. More information about these programs can be found in the parent newsletters on the Zach Elementary website.

Valentine’s Day is Wednesday, February 14th. Before our class Valentine’s Day party (2:45 to 3:30), we will have visitors from Kinard and Preston (1:30 to 2:30) here to talk about registering for classes in sixth grade. In fifth grade, we keep parties simple. We’ll have a competition for the heartiest, sportiest, and the most unique Valentine's Day Box. The kids will distribute and read their Valentines. I’ll also pick up a treat for the students to enjoy. If we have time, we’ll play a few games.

You should have received a blank envelope in your child’s Friday Folder a few backs week. As a special treat for your child, I would like you to send a personal Valentine message to your child for him or her to open with his or her other Valentines that day. To keep this a surprise, please return your note to school in this envelope on or before Friday, February 3rd, and I will put the note in your child’s Valentine box right before the party.

A Peek At What We are Doing in Fifth Grade

We have had a crazy week. Since we were off on Monday to honor Martin Luther King Jr., we only had a four day week. On Thursday, we enjoyed a performance from the Fort Collins Symphony. Today, we had presenters from HP visit our classroom to talk about coding, and we shared our amazing edible cell projects.

A few students who chose longer biographies or were absent a few days this week, will need to take this weekend to finish reading their biographies. We’ll begin sorting our notes and planning our informational books on our Wax Museum figure starting Monday.

On Monday, we’ll also begin Winter Maps testing during Math and Reading classes. Students will take their Block 2 Maps test on Monday, January 22nd and their Block 1 Maps test on Tuesday, January 23rd. To give each students plenty of time, students will not have their other block on the days we Maps test.

You should have received a blank envelope in your child’s Friday Folder last week.

Although it was hard for all of us to get back into the routine of school again, I think we are off to a great 2018.

We started research on our people for Wax Museum by locating and reading online sources then, on Friday, we started our biographies. Our goal is to have our biographies completed by Friday, January 19th. Although the students have 30 minutes to reading class each day, they should be reading at home too. For some students, especially those that had longer biographies, I will give them the weekend to finish so that they are ready to begin planning and drafting their research paper on Tuesday, January 23rd.

Your child also brought home a note this week about the edible cell project. I believe students learn more from the process of making the project than what can be seen in the ultimate product. Don’t worry if the cell looks yucky! The project does making a poster as well so encourage your child to read the expectations carefully. The projects are due Friday, January 19th.

I realize that I’ve given the students quite a bit these first two weeks back from the break. I explained to my class sometimes life happens this way and lots of things fall at the same time. I have asked them to use their time wisely and to communicate with me early if they need help getting everything completed.

On Thursday, January 18th, we are going to the symphony in the morning. Students are encouraged to dress appropriately - nicer than regular school clothes.

We’ll be taking Winter Maps during Math and Reading classes. Students will take their Block 2 Maps test on Monday, January 22nd and their Block 1 Maps test on Tuesday, January 23rd. To give each students plenty of time, students will not have their other block on the days we Maps test.
