A Peek At What We are Doing in Fifth Grade

Each year, I leave Wax Museum night in a state of both exhaustion and euphoria. It always amazes me what the students are able to do. I hope each student was proud of his or her hard work because I sure was proud of them.

After Spring Break, we will begin CMAS testing. Students in fifth grade take ELA (Reading and Writing), Science, and Math. Students will be taking ...

the ELA test - Tues., April 2nd - Thurs., April 4th,
the Science test - Tues., April 9th & Wed., April 10th, and
the Math test - Tues., April 16th - Thurs., April 17th.

We test in the mornings from 10:15 to 12:40. If at all possible, please avoid appoints on these days which might require your child to be absent. It is also important that students not leave during the test, as students must finish the test the day they start. Unfortunately, this is a lot of testing that we as teachers are required to administer. As a team, we do our best to keep as much instruction time intact without overwhelming the students.

A Peek At What We are Doing in Fifth Grade

Thursday night, February 21st from 6:00 to 7:00, is the 5th Grade Wax Museum night. We hope you will be able to make it. Here are a few reminders just to make the night go smoothly.

- Students should arrive at Zach, with their costumes on, at 5:45. We’ll need a few minutes to get everyone in place and set up to go.

- Parents, please plan to arrive at 6:00 as that's when we will be opening the doors to the public.

- In years past, we have encouraged parents to bring in coins to activate the wax figures. This year students will have red buttons on their wrists that you will gently tap to activate the figures. No need to bring any coins, thank you.

- As you know, the students each wrote an informational book on their wax museum figure before writing their speeches. Those papers will be out in the cafeteria for you to read. Post-it notes and pens will be there on the tables for you to leave “way to go” notes on their papers.

- We will hold a dress rehearsal on Thursday afternoon. Students will need to bring their costumes with them to school that day, but we will be sending them home with them so they can come to school that evening in their costume.

- We'd like your help with one other thing on Wax Museum night. As we will have lots of kids presenting and lots of parents observing, it is important that we keep side conversations to a minimum. It has the potential to get very loud. Please feel free to chat in the cafeteria away from the presenters. The kids have worked so hard we want to honor their work by being great audiences.

A Peek At What We are Doing in Fifth Grade

Preston and Kinard visited with the students and gave them registration packets. Preston forms are due Friday, February 22nd. Kinard forms are due Thursday, February 28th. I’m happy to collect the forms and send them on to the middle schools, but I’ll need to have them before the due date. If you have questions, please contact the middle school directly.

We are making great progress on our Wax Museum project. Students drafted their speeches this week. We’ll make revisions next week and begin memorizing them. Yes, I did say memorizing them. If you need any help with your child’s costume, please let me know. Keep in mind that your child doesn’t need to look exactly like their Wax Museum person. I’ve had many families in the past have had great luck putting together a costume with the help of Goodwill.

The Zach Science Fair & Invention Convention
will be held on March 12th, 2019 and is open to all 3rd-5th grade students.

Valentine’s Day is Thursday, February 14th. In fifth grade, we keep parties simple. We’ll have a competition for the heartiest, sportiest, and the most unique Valentine's Day Box. The kids will distribute and read their Valentines. I’ll also pick up a treat for the students to enjoy. If we have time, we’ll play a few games.

Thank you to everyone who gave me their valentine for their student. If you haven’t, please do so as soon as possible. I want every child to have a valentine from their parents.

A Peek At What We are Doing in Fifth Grade

Last week, the fifth grader’s recognized another group of students for their “Fifth-Grade Awesomeness.” Here is a picture.

Today was the teacher’s turn to recognize students as Super Zephs for showing one of the 4 traits of ROAR. We recognized Nicholas, MacKayla, Lara, and Phoenix. (Sorry, I didn’t get a picture.)

We’re almost finished with our Wax Museum papers. Next week we’ll do some additional editing and add a few images and other text features. Today we talked about costumes so your child should be talking about that with you this weekend. Near the end of the week, we’ll be writing our speeches. Each year the students plead with me to let them use notecards for their speech and a reassure them that, yes, they can recite their speech without any notes. They always do great. I love this part the most as I often see students begin to grow in their self-confidence.

Next Friday, we’ll have visitors here from Kinard and Preston to talk to the students about their class selection for 6th Grade. Your child may have picked up the packet, that the schools provide at one of the school’s one house. If so, they won’t be given anything knew, but this is an opportunity to as the counselors any questions.
